Sharks score huge signing with Caitlan Johnston coup

The Cronulla Sharks have pulled off an absolutely massive NRL Women’s signing coup, poaching World Cup winner and two-time premier Caitlan Johnston from the Newcastle Knights from next year.

Johnston, who is rated among the game’s best front-rowers at just 23, will play one more season for reigning champions the Knights before making the move south.

The 23-year-old is now signed from 2025 through to 2027 with the Sydney club.

The Windale junior came through the Knights pathways before signing with Newcastle’s premiership team in 2021. She started at prop in the club’s 2022 and 2023 grand final victories and has played at representative level for Australia, the Prime Minister’s XIII, and the Indigenous All-Stars, the latter of which saw her wearing the skipper’s armband.

“She’s already scaled the heights of the game, but at 23, her best years are still ahead of her. We look forward to her coming on board in 2025 and sharing her experience,” Sharks NRLW coach Tony Herman said after the signing was official announced today.
