The first weekend of National Football League free agency took place this past weekend, and there were two significant free agent signings. According to Spotrac on Friday, the Seattle Seahawks have signed wide receiver Cooper Kupp of Yakima, Washington to a three-year deal worth $45 million, and on Saturday, the Los Angeles Chargers have signed offensive lineman Mekhi Becton of Highland Springs, Virginia to a two-year deal worth $20 million.
There is a similarity between both players as they are both Super Bowl champions. Kupp won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, and Becton won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. Kupp was in fact Super Bowl MVP.
Kupp is returning to his home state of Washington as he is from Yakima. He has played the last eight seasons with the Rams since 2017. This past season, Kupp had 67 catches for 710 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He also had two rushes for 10 rushing yards.
Kupp’s most magical National Football League season came in 2021. In addition to being the eventual Super Bowl MVP, Kupp led the NFL that season in receptions (145), receiving yards (1947), touchdown catches (16), and yards per game (114.5). Kupp was also selected to the Pro Bowl and was the 2021 Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year.
Bechton is joining his his third NFL franchise. He played three seasons with the New York Jets (2020, 2021 and 2023), and this past season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. Bechton, whose primary position is tackle, did not play the entire 2023 NFL season because of a knee injury.
