We have been waiting all year for greatness from the world number one, Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey. The 2022 and 2024 Masters champion won his first PGA event of 2025 with a win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson outside of Dallas. While it should never be difficult to pick the world number, as we did last week, what we saw from Scheffler over the last four days was pure spectacular golf.
Scheffler did not just beat the field. He destroyed it. Scheffler beat his nearest opponent, Erik van Rooyen of South Africa, by eight strokes. According to Kevin Prise of pgatour.com, the eight stroke win was the largest victory on tour since Dustin Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina won the 2020 FedEx St. Jude Championship by 11 strokes over Harris English of Valdosta, Georgia.
Scheffler’s score of -31 was the third best score at a PGA event this season. He was only behind 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama of Matsuyama, Japan, who posted a record score of -35 in winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui in January, and two-time major champion Colin Morikawa of Los Angeles, California, who finished second in Maui with a score of -32. Morikawa, like Scheffler, is a multiple major champion, as he won the 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 British Open.
In Texas, Scheffler had a first round score of 10-under-par 61, a second round score of eight-under-par 63, a third round par of five-under-par 66, and a fourth round score of eight-under-par 63. Scheffler had an eagle in three of his four rounds. He posted a score of three on the par five on the ninth hole in round one and round four, and the 18th hole in round two.
