Raiders sign tight end Austin Hooper

According to Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports on Wednesday, the Las Vegas Raiders signed tight end Austin Hooper of San Mateo, California to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million. The Raiders were in need of a tight end after trading Darren Waller to the New York Giants on March 14, and with the news on Thursday that tight end Foster Moreau of New Orleans, Louisiana will be stepping away from professional football after being diagnosed with cancer.

Hooper joins his fourth National Football League franchise. He previously played four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons from 2016 to 2019, two seasons with the Cleveland Browns in 2020 and 2021, and one season with the Tennessee Titans in 2022. This past season in Tennessee, Hooper had 41 catches for 444 yards and two touchdowns. Both of his major scores came in a 27-17 Tennessee win over the Green Bay Packers. Hooper had a touchdown of three yards and another of 16 yards. The three-yard touchdown catch was significant because it came from Titans running back Derrick Henry. This was the first time in Hooper’s career that he had a multiple touchdown performance in a game in leading his team to victory.

In 105 NFL career games, Hooper has 339 catches for 3468 yards and 25 touchdowns. In back-to-back seasons with the Atlanta Falcons in 2018 and 2019, Hooper was selected to the Pro Bowl. In 2018, he had 71 catches for 660 yards and four touchdowns. In 2019, Hooper had 75 catches for 787 yards and six touchdowns.

In the playoffs, Hooper has 19 catches for 145 yards and two major scores. Hooper’s second postseason touchdown came in the Browns’s notable 48-37 wildcard win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on January 10, 2021. Hooper had a seven yard major score from Baker Mayfield, in a half that saw the Browns score 35 points.
