Race By Race Review: Tempo Breakdown, Track Bias & Runner Insights – Rosehill Saturday 29th March

Wow, what a day it was, and it certainly will leave its mark for years to come. It was excellent seeing Tommy Berry take out multiple Group 1 races as well as new trainer, Annabel Neasham winning her 1st Group 1.  Both Verry Elleegant and Addeybb locked horns for their third match up and if that’s anything to go by this Queen Elizabeth is going to be spectacular!

Track Details

  • Rail Position: 3m
  • Track Rating: Soft 7/6
  • Bias: Rails In Running

We saw a lot of horses at Rosehill on Saturday win from a rails in run position. Jockeys that were able to switch of their mount and bring them to the centre of the track had the most luck with a lot of horses winning having that “first run”.

Winners Positioning In Running

  • Leaders: 1
  • Midfielders: 6
  • Backmarkers: 2

Race 1

  • Tempo: Average
  • Winner & Price: Isotope – $3.60

Both Odeum and Matchmaker were slow out of the barriers however, with Odeum drawing barrier 1 Michael Walker was able to kick up and sit behind Bella Nipotina who led. Odeum slipped through a gap that was created by Lord Olympus shifting out and went for home to only be caught by the flying filly for QLD, Isotope late.

I would be forgiving of Private Eye as he lost a few lengths at the 600m and was chasing since then. Marboosha was flat considering how she looked and her run-in transit. Bella Nipotina, honest. Matchmaker can make us some money over 1400m next time in easier grade. Good type and will be better in her next prep. Doubtland – Time for the chop if they want to keep racing.

Blackbookers

#4 Odeum – Going well this prep, has a win in her shortly but looks as though they are setting her up for a serious dig at something. Coolmore Legacy formally known as the Queen Of The Turf looks her race.

#5 Private Eye – Complete forgive. Clipped heels at the 600m and was chasing since. 10 weeks off with no public trials, could have needed the run.

Race 2

  • Tempo: Slow
  • Winner & Price: Favourite Moon – $6.50

Quick Thinker came out fast from the outside gate and Hush Writer was able to dictate things at his own terms. Realm Of Flowers was caught wide the entire and was still able to come with a final effort to just miss against the imported, Favourite Moon from the William Haggas yard.

There were a few very disappointing runs in behind these horses none more so than Collide who was never a factor. Puts serious question marks on his Sydney Cup chances as I thought his 1st Australian run showed promise. Selino is on the right track and has only improved with distance. Ready to peak next time out.

Blackbookers

#9 Selino – On the right track and has only improved with distance. Ready to peak next time out.

#14 Realm of Flowers – Continues to run good races. Busting to break through but will have to verse the best opposition to do so.

Race 3

  • Tempo: Fast
  • Winner & Price: Polly Grey – $6.50

Both She’s Ideel and Welsh Legend were slow out of the gates and subsequently sat further back than what they have previously. First things first, She’s Ideel is flying and was deadset a moral beaten. She was held up until the 200m mark when a small gap opened, and she flooded home in a 11.84 L200m sectional which was about 3 lengths faster than anything else in the race. She’s proving a bit costly for punters but has to break through shortly.

Polly Grey got her much deserved win, 1st one in Australia too. Welsh Legend was a complete forgive and she is going well this preparation. Rondinella much better, Le Lude consistent as always.

Blackbookers

#7 She’s Ideel – Airborne this campaign and is busting for a win. Will have to do it against the top tier now as that was her race to win against lesser opposition.

#8 Welsh Legend – Complete forgive. Missed the kick, way too far back and held up.

Race 4

  • Tempo: Slow
  • Winner & Price:  Verry Elleegant – $2.80

Verry Elleegant was able to turn the tables on her English rival, Addeybb with a thrilling win in the 2021 Ranvet Stakes. Both Marquand and McDonald rode there mounts forward and it was a very similarly run race to what it was last year funnily enough.

I thought Colette was the unlucky runner in the field being 3WNC for the entire, she stuck on well. Angel Of Truth ran another great race and he is truly airborne this preparation. Looks as though he is on a Sydney Cup path and the early 15s look appealing. Sir Dragonet was much better with the Norton Bit on.

I don’t think there’s much between Verry Elleegant and Addeybb this year, but I do believe the team had their eyes firmly set on the QE and were using the Ranvet more as a steppingstone this year rather than having to prove something this year. I’m expecting him to turn the tables in 3 weeks’ time.

Blackbookers

#1 Addeybb – Still, in my eyes the one to beat for the QE. He will be fully tuned up to win the race and the stable have their eyes set on it.

#4 Angel Of Truth – On track for the Sydney Cup.

Race 5

  • Tempo: Average
  • Winner & Price: Mo’unga – $2.90

Grandslam led at his own measure at a fairly decent trip. Khoekhoe went to eyeball him at the turn, and he imploded pretty quickly. Milford was racing ungenerously around the straight and the Nose Roll basically shows that he is an immature horse who does things wrong. Mo’unga and Sky Lab battled it out for a very good finish with Mo’unga getting the best of his opponent late.

Lion’s Roar was coming between horses but simply wasn’t up to running past the top few. Montefilia was very good for a horse that was a month off between runs and 1400m up to 2000m. If they decide to back her up, she’s the one to beat in the Vinery Stud Stakes. Wheelhouse another solid run.

Blackbookers

#15 Montefilia – Very good for a horse that was a month off between runs and 1400m up to 2000m. If they decide to back her up, she’s the one to beat in the Vinery Stud Stakes.

Race 6

  • Tempo: Slow
  • Winner & Price: Think It Over – $26.00

It was an extremely slowly run race which suited the leading pair and/or horses that were able to get the gaps on the rails (Dreamforce & Think It Over). Avilius was the hard luck story and showed that he is airborne this prep. He travelled sweetly into the race and was busting for a run before Nash came across heels and barged his way out of a pack to flash late.

Cascadian made up a ton of ground late and in doing so ran the fastest L400/200m of the entire race and day. He has returned in great order but has done this previously so be weary. Samadoubt and Dreamforce much improved efforts. Funstar disappointing.

Blackbookers

#2 Avilius – Airborne this prep and should have won. Will improve out to 1800-2000m. Will appreciate a wet track.

#8 Cascadian – Made up a ton of ground late and in doing so ran the fastest L400/200m of the entire race and day. He has returned in great order but has done this previously so be weary.

Race 7

  • Tempo: Fast
  • Winner & Price: Stay Inside – $5.00

It was once again a fastly run slipper where Profiteer went along at a crazy tempo out in front. Stay Inside was able to get the box seat run, peeled out on the turn and sprinted clear to give Tommy Berry his 4th Golden Slipper victory. I thought the runs of both Four Moves Ahead and Ingratiating were very good.

Anamoe made up a stack of ground from well back running the fastest L600m of the race and being the only horse to crack the 35 second mark. The horse I want to be following out of this race and possibly the meeting is Artorius. He was absolutely huge from where he ended up. Keen the entire and looked lost making multiple runs inside and outside horses for whatever reason. He was green as grass and thundered home with a ripping stride. He hadn’t raced in over a month and this was a truly remarkable run. Certainly, has me excited for the Sires and he will be the one that will lap up 1400m.

Race 8

  • Tempo: Fast
  • Winner & Price: Eduardo – $5.50

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and looking back at this race and the form leading into it – Why wasn’t Eduardo at least favourite, if not near even money? His 1st up performance was dynamic when beating Nature Strip and breaking the Randwick 1000m track record by half a second. He proved that he is airborne, demolishing this field of proven sprinters by over 3 lengths! Haut Brion Her just peaked on her run and being 1 month between her last trial and 1st up run probably did that for her. Can pay to forgive her slightly.

Splintex was good from an unusual running position for him and is knocking on the door for a win in good company despite being beaten a long way. If he can find a weak enough race that he can dictate in he will be hard to beat. Dirty Work has come back very well. 2 eye catching runs now and just continues to progress. Jonker good. Wild Ruler missed the start slightly and was further back than what he can be. Hit the line fairly well but not a standout horse to follow unless back to 3yo races.

Race 9

  • Tempo: Fast
  • Winner & Price: Seasons – $6.50

Vulpine crossed from a wide alley and ensured there would be a good tempo with Emanate keen on her outside. Written Beauty was keen in behind these too. All horses mentioned failed to make an impression on the race with Vulpine finishing the best of the brigade (5th beaten by 3L). Seaons received a peach steer from Kerrin McEvoy and sprinted off a dime to claim a soft victory in the end.

The horse giving them all weight, Tricky Gal was very good with J Mac scraping paint to come 2nd with both Wandabaa and Air To Air closing late outwide. Both mentioned horses have come back well and Wandabaa in particular confirmed that once again with another ripping performance from the rear.

Blackbookers

#4 Wandabaa – Another solid run and ran the fastest late splits of the race. Desperate for a good draw and possibly 1300-1400m now.

#17 Air To Air – Always been a mare with ability, just a complete headcase. Might have matured in the time she had off and ran very well in her return effort.

Horse To Follow:

Artorius

  • Race 7
  • 1200m
  • Group 1 – Golden Slipper

I would have spent a solid 30 minutes watching the Slipper over and even though the winner, Stay Inside was excellent as well as runner up Anamoe, I just can’t get over this colts run. He had everything against him from, the time off to the barrier draw to the map. It was his 1st time running the Sydney way and he looked as though he resented it tossing his head up and running all over the place down the home straight. When he finally flattened out late, he screamed home with huge strides that I will never forget!

When To Bet

1400m, Randwick in a race called the Sires Produce, you know the one! Has his name written all over it!

Horse To Sack:

Marboosha

  • Race 1
  • 1200m
  • Listed Level

I thought she looked a million dollars in the yard and considering all the factors she was disappointing. She blew many people off their seats 1st up and from the position she found herself in running she should have offered more in the final 200m of the race. Hard to see her beating the top liners and you can’t get all favours like she did on Saturday every run. Have to make the most of it when you get them!
