World number 27 Paul Casey of Cheltenham, England is the latest golfer to join the newly-formed LIV Golf Invitational Series according to Todd Kelly of Golfweek. Casey is now one of four golfers to join the series who attended Arizona State University. He joins six-time major champion Phil Mickelson of San Diego, California, Pat Perez of Phoenix, Arizona, and Australia’s own Matt Jones of Sydney. It is interesting that all four of these golfers are 40 years or older.
Casey is the second best English golfer at the moment. He is only behind reigning United States Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick of Sheffield, England. Casey has been as high as third in the world in 2009, has won three times on the PGA Tour and 15 times on the European Tour. Casey’s PGA Tour wins came at the 2009 Shell Houston Open, and the 2018 and 2019 Valspar Championship. The 2009 Shell Houston Open win came in a playoff over J.B. Holmes of the United States.
The LIV Golf Invitational Series continues to generate momentum. The series can now be seen on Canadian television through TVA Sports, and attention is growing by the fact that there are 54 holes and no cuts. It should be interesting what will start to happen when the series starts to sign more players. Will they continue to have a 48-player field or will there be players who competed in London and Portland who will now not be invited to future tournaments in 2022 because Casey is now a participant? The next event is at Bedminster (Donald Trump’s course) at the end of July.
