Our Black Book: Horses You Must Follow From Caulfield 21/10
October 25, 2023
Our analyst has reviewed the sectional times, ratings & replays from last Saturday’s Caulfield meeting & has placed four horses you must follow in our black book below.
GATES
Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman have a legitimate Victoria Derby hope in the son of Frankel. He didn’t have the finishing burst of the pair who defeated him which were Sunsets and Riff Rocket but he finished off like a horse who is looking for more ground. He was also strong after the line.
BASILINNA
She’s shaping as the ideal VRC Oaks filly. She’s bred on staying lines and her third placing in the Ethereal Stakes over 2000 metres demonstrated she will relish the 2500 metres of the Oaks. She was the best finisher at Caulfield behind Autumn Angel and she powered home after the line.
CALL DI
She didn’t get the right breaks when she finished third in the Tristarc Stakes. She travelled well throughout but Blake Shinn was caught in a zip faster from half way during the race as he couldn’t find a gap to pressure for the lead so he had to bide his time waiting for a run which didn’t come. In the finish he had to wait before getting her to the outside late in the race. She will be a chance in the Empire Rose Stakes.

GOLD TRIP
Another sensational run from last year’s Melbourne Cup for third in the Caulfield Cup. He finished on resolutely and the step up to 3200 metres will suit him. He’s also going to be a chance in the Cox Plate where he will be suited by the high pressure and it was a race he was unlucky in last year.
