Penrith too strong for faltering Broncos
Brisbane have now lost four of their past seven after succumbing to the defending premier Panthers 15-4 at Suncorp on Thursday night to kick-off Indigenous Round.
Penrith took an 8-0 lead into the break thanks to a Sunia Turuva try and a pair of Nathan Cleary goals before the lead ballooned out to 14 thanks to a Cleary try at the 50-minute mark.
A Selwyn Cobbo try just shy of the hour-mark opened the door for a Broncos comeback but Penrith held strong to grab their third win in a row.
Cleary was sensational for the reigning champs scoring a try, making three line breaks, and running for 208 metres with six tackle breaks whilst Dylan Edwards ran for a game-high 275 metres with 12 tackle breaks.
For Brisbane, Patrick Carrigan ran for 181 metres and made an absurd 67 tackles whilst Herbie Farnworth ran for 247 metres with seven tackle breaks.
Red V Miracle: Dragons pull off remarkable, last-second upset
The Dragons snapped their six-game losing streak thanks to a final-second Mathew Feagai try helping them secure a 24-22 win over the Roosters at Kogarah on Friday night.
Tries to Moses Suli and Ben Hunt helped the Dragons build a 14-0 lead early in the second half before a trio of Roosters tries in the space of 11 minutes – including two to Luke Keary – gave the visitors the lead.
Jaydn Su’A scored what threatened to be the match-winner with seven minutes left for the Dragons before James Tedesco answered with a try of his own off a one-on-one strip to with less than five to play.
The Dragons looked destined for yet another heartbreaking defeat only for Feagai to reel in a cross-field Tyrell Sloan kick to tie it before Zac Lomax slotted the conversion after the siren to send the red and white faithful into delirium.
Hunt scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 107 metres with six tackle breaks whilst Su’A scored a try, ran for 146 metres with five tackle breaks, and made 27 tackles.
For the Chooks, James Tedesco scored a double, assisted on another, and ran for 200 metres with 11 tackle breaks whilst Keary scored two and ran for 125 metres.
Eels flex muscles to end Rabbits’ win streak
South Sydney’s six-game winning run ended with a 36-16 defeat at the hands of Parramatta on Friday at Allianz with the blue and golds pouring on 24 unanswered points to seal the upset.
A first-half double to Alex Johnston had Souths trailing by just two heading into the break before a quick Campbell Graham try put them ahead early in the second half.
The final half-hour was all Parramatta, however, with Bryce Cartwright grabbing a try and Bailey Simonsson grabbing a second before Dylan Brown and Will Penisini topped it off for the side.
Brown scored a try and ran for 140 metres with four tackle breaks whilst Mitchell Moses assisted on four tries and kicked for 377 metres.
For the Bunnies, Cody Walker assisted on all three of their tries and ran for 90 metres.
Sharks breeze past Knights in Coffs
Cronulla have now won five of their past six after proving too strong for the Knights in Coffs Harbour on Saturday afternoon.
Will Kennedy and Kalyn Ponga crossed for their respective sides early before a Ronaldo Mulitalo four-pointer gave the Sharks a six-point advantage heading into the sheds.
Second-half tries to Connor Tracey and Royce Hunt allowed the Sharks to cruise towards another win as Adam O’Brien’s Knights slumped to their fourth loss from five games.
Kennedy scored a try, assisted on another, and ran for 181 metres with 10 tackle breaks whilst Nicho Hynes ran for 181 metres and kicked for 556 metres.
A 66-point avalanche: Wests Tigers stun Cowboys in 11-try rout
The Wests Tigers managed to put together one of the most stunning 80 minutes of football in recent memory thumping the Cowboys 66-18 at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday evening to celebrate Luke Brooks’ 200th game.
Three tries in the opening 17 minutes got the hosts off to a flyer before rookie Jahream Bula pounced on a poor Kyle Feldt error on the stroke of half-time to give them a 24-6 lead.
Tries to Junior Tupou and Fonua Pole made the scoreboard an ugly sight for the Cows early in the second stanza before they notched two tries of their own to cut it to 36-18 with less than a quarter of the game to go.
The Wests Tigers humiliated the Cowboys late scoring five tries in the final 17 minutes to send the Leichhardt faithful into hysteria..
Bula scored a try, assisted on two others, and ran for a game-high 241 metres whilst Brooks assisted on a pair of tries and ran for 212 metres with five tackle breaks.
Starford To’a scored a double, assisted on another, made five line breaks, and ran for 230 metres with 12 tackle breaks whilst Tupou also snagged a double, and ran for 195 metres with eight tackle breaks.
Storm hold off Dolphins at Suncorp
Melbourne have now won six of their past eight after finishing atop the Dolphins in a fiery Saturday night affair at Suncorp.
Felise Kaufusi was binned for a swinging arm into the chops of former teammate Christian Welch in the opening minute which led to a Will Warbrick try.
Jamayne Isaako answered for the Dolphins before the Storm poured on a trio of tries in 19 minutes to give them a 24-6 lead heading into the intermission.
The Dolphins fought back in the second half via late tries to Isaako and Kodi Nikorima but it proved in vein with Melbourne holding on for the victory.
Eliesa Katoa scored and assisted on a try for the Storm to go along with 22 tackles without a miss whilst Nick Meaney assisted on a try and ran for a team-high 149 metres with five tackle breaks.
For the Dolphins, Isaako scored a double and ran for a game-high 169 metres with six tackle breaks.
Dogs come from behind to shock Titans
Canterbury managed to come away with a much-needed 20-18 win over the Titans at Accor Stadium on Sunday afternoon thanks to a Jayden Okunbor match-winner in the 77th minute.
The Gold Coast enjoyed a near-perfect opening stanza with tries to David Fifita and Joe Stimson propelling them to an early 14-0 lead.
Jake Averillo and Josh Addo-Carr both crossed for the Bulldogs in the opening five minutes of the second half to ignite the contest before Phillip Sami crossed on the hour-mark to settle things for the visitors.
A Jacob Kiraz try breathed some life back into the Dogs’ chance before Okunbor powered his way to the line in the final minutes to tie it and allow Matt Burton to slot the game-winning conversion.
Burton was superb for the Dogs assisting on two tries and running for 105 metres with five tackle breaks whilst Tevita Pangai ran for a game-high 213 metres from 19 carries and made 34 tackles.
For the Titans, Moeaki Fotuaika ran for 177 metres from 18 carries with four tackle breaks and made 37 tackles whilst Tino Fa’asuamaleaui assisted on a try, ran for 148 metres with five tackle breaks, and made 42 tackles.
Sea Eagles come away with brilliant win in nation’s capital
A Tom Trbojevic masterclass propelled the Sea Eagles to a dominant 42-14 win over the Raiders in Canberra to finish the round and snap the Green Machine’s five-game winning streak.
Elliott Whitehead crossed early for the hosts before Manly grabbed three tries in the space of 11 minutes to take a 16-8 lead into the break.
Manly enjoyed another try-scoring feast crossing for a quartet of tries in just 16 minutes to break the game apart as tensions began heating up with both Sean Keppie and Hudson Young binned for a confrontation midway through the second stanza.
Tom Trbojevic scored a hat-trick, assisted on another, and ran for a game-high 245 metres with nine tackle breaks whilst Josh Schuster assisted on a trio of tries in his first game in a month.
