Novak Djokovic records memorable comeback for second French Open men’s singles title

For the second time in his men’s tennis career, Novak Djokovic of Belgrade, Serbia won the men’s singles title at the French Open. On Sunday, Djokovic came two sets to love down, to come all of the way back and beat Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Djokovic became the eighth player all-time to come back to win the French Open men’s final after losing the first two sets. He follows Max Decugis of France (1909), Marcel Bernard of France (1946), Rod Laver of Australia (1962), Bjorn Borg of Sweden (1974), Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia (1984), Andre Agassi of the United States (1994), and Gaston Gaudio of Argentina (2004). Laver’s 1962 French Open title came the same year he won all four majors in a single season. (Known as the grand slam).

Djokovic also became the first player to come back from two sets to love down twice during the same grand slam and win the tournament in the Open Era according to the BBC. He previously had beaten Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the fourth round, 6-7, 6-7, 6-1, 6-0, 4-0. Musetti retired in the fifth set with lower back pain according to Reuters.

Djokovic’s other fine accomplishment is the fact he is now only the third tennis player ever to win each grand slam title twice in his career. The other two to accomplish the feat are two Australians–Roy Emerson and Rod Laver.

Now the question in tennis is will Djokovic win all four grand slam titles in 2021? He is halfway there. Djokovic already won the Australian Open in February. The last player to win all four men’s singles majors in one year was Laver in 1969.

Djokovic now has 19 career men’s singles titles. His first French Open title came in 2016, when he beat Andy Murray of Great Britain, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
