Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios of Canberra tested positive for cocaine and has been suspended from tennis according to the Associated Press on Wednesday. The positive test came on June 22 while he was competing in Mallorca, Spain.
Kyrgios competed in two ATP events in Europe on grass in the month of June. He defeated Courentin Moutet of France 6-3, 6-4 in the first round in Stuttgart before losing 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the second round to Sho Shimabukuro of Japan. Then, in the first round of Mallorca, Spain, leading up to Wimbledon, Kyrgios lost to fellow Australian Adam Walton of Home Hill, 6-3, 6-4.
This is the third time in Kyrgios’s career he has been suspended. However, we do not know at this time how long the suspension is for. We do know that Kyrgios has provisionally been suspended since August 4. Kyrgios’s first suspension took place in 2016 when he was suspended eight weeks for “tanking a match” at the Shanghai Masters according to tennis.com. Kyrgios was also fined $25,000 for insulting fans in a second round loss to Germany’s Mischa Zverev (older brother of French Open champion Alexander Zverev). Then in 2019, Kyrgios was suspended four months for five separate incidents of unsportsmanlike conduct at the Cincinnati Open.
Throughout Kyrgios’s career, we have seen moments of brilliance. He made the final of Wimbledon in 2022, and has won seven ATP singles events. They took place in Marseille in 2016, Atlanta in 2016, Japan in 2016, Brisbane in 2018, Mexico in 2019, and Washington in 2019 and 2022.
