Alexander Zverev of Hamburg, Germany has won the 2026 French Open. On Sunday, Zverev, the second seed, defeated Flavio Cobolli of Florence, Italy, the 10th seed, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 to win his first career grand slam singles title.
Zverev had the first serve statistical advantage in the match. Zverev won 76% of the points, while Cobolli won 53%. Zverev also saw Cobolli’s serve very well throughout the match as he broke it nine times.
The middle three sets in the men’s final were extremely close. Where Zverev dominated was the opening set and the deciding set, as he won 12 of 14 games.
This was not the first time that Zverev had played a fifth set of a grand slam men’s singles final. He previously lost 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 to Dominic Thiem of Austria in the 2020 United States Open final and lost 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 to Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the 2024 French Open final.
Cobolli was one of three seeded players Zverev defeated in winning the French Open. He also defeated the 27th seed, Rafael Jodar of Spain, 7-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, and the 26th seed, Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic, 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Zverev became the third German man to win the French Open title. Gottfried von Cramm won in 1934 and 1936, and Henner Henkel won in 1937. What is also remarkable about Zverev’s accomplishment is that he won the 2026 French Open with Type 1 diabetes.
