According to ESPN on Wednesday, the Houston Texans signed cornerback Steven Nelson of Warner Robins, Georgia to a two-year deal worth $10 million. The Texans become Nelson’s fourth National Football League team following four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and one season with the Philadelphia Eagles.
There had been speculation that the Texans would look to draft a cornerback. Now it appears they can focus on the many other positions they need to improve prior to the 2022 NFL season.
Last season with Philadelphia, Nelson started all 16 games and had 50 combined tackles (34 solo tackles and 16 assisted tackles), seven pass deflections, and one interception for four yards. The pick came in a 21-18 Eagles win over the Carolina Panthers on October 10. The Panthers quarterback in the contest was Sam Darnold, who threw three interceptions in the game. Cornerback Darius Slay of Brunswick, Georgia, had the other two interceptions.
For his career, Nelson has played in 98 NFL regular season games. He has 341 combined tackles (287 solo tackles and 54 assisted tackles), 10 tackles for a loss, one quarterback hit, eight interceptions for 93 yards, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries. The quarterback hit came in a 19-14 Chiefs win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 6, 2016. The forced fumble came in a 26-15 Chiefs win over the Oakland Raiders on December 10, 2017.
Nelson was the third round pick, 98th overall, by the Chiefs in the 2015 NFL Draft. He played his college football at Oregon State where he was coached by former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike Riley.
