Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins died on Saturday at the age of 24 according to Cydney Henderson of USA Today. The native of Highland Park, New Jersey died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida while trying to cross a busy highway as a pedestrian and was hit by a dump truck.

We may never know why Haskins was trying to cross the highway. He is survived by his wife Kalabrya, his parents Dwayne and Tamara, and his sister Tamia.

Haskins was one of three quarterbacks who were to battle for the Steelers starting quarterback position this year in training camp. He was joined by Mitch Trubisky, who the Steelers signed in the offseason from the Buffalo Bills, and Mason Rudolph.

Haskins was a backup quarterback in Pittsburgh in 2021 behind Ben Roethlisberger and Rudolph, but did not play any games. With the recent retirement of Roethlisberger, Haskins was expected to compete for playing time with the Steelers in 2022.

In two National Football League seasons with Washington in 2019 and 2020, Haskins completed 267 passes in 444 attempts for 2804 yards. He had 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Haskins also had 40 rushes for 147 yards and one touchdown. Haskins’ lone rushing touchdown came in a 31-17 Washington loss to the Baltimore Ravens on October 4, 2020.

Haskins was the first round draft pick, 15th overall, by Washington in the 2019 NFL draft. He played his collegiate career with Ohio State, where he won the 2018 Kellen Moore Award, presented to the top quarterback in college football, and the 2018 Sammy Baugh Award, presented to the top passer in collegiate football. In 2018, he had 4831 yards with the Buckeyes. Haskins signed with the Steelers on March 16, 2022.
