Quenton Nelson becomes highest paid guard in NFL history

According to Ryan Morik of FOX News, Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson of Holmdel, New Jersey made National Football League history on Sunday by becoming the highest paid offensive guard ever. Nelson signed a four-year contract extension worth $80 million, of which will see him make an average of $20 million per year.

Of the $80 million, $60 million will be guaranteed. Remember, not all NFL contracts are guaranteed, unlike Major League Baseball contracts.

This is Nelson’s fifth season with the Colts. He played 61 regular season games prior to Sunday, and went to the Pro Bowl in each of his first four NFL seasons. Nelson had one solo tackle last year. It came in a 38-31 Colts loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 28.

Nelson was the sixth overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He was selected behind quarterback Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, Browns cornerback Denzel Ward, and Denver Broncos defensive end Bradley Chubb. Mayfield and Darnold are now both with the Carolina Panthers.

The Nelson signing was one of two massive contract extensions signed by a NFL player this month. On September 1, the Broncos signed newly acquired quarterback Russell Wilson to a five-year deal worth $245 million.

The Colts meanwhile continue to underachieve against inferior divisional opponents. After missing the playoffs at the end of last season with a 26-11 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis could only come away with a 20-20 tie against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
