Cardinals sign Kyler Murray to massive extension
July 23, 2022

Kyler Murray of Bedford, Texas is now one of the richest quarterbacks in the National Football League. Now heading into his fourth season, Murray signed a five-year deal worth $230.5 million with the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday according to Joe Rivera of The Sporting News. Unless Murray is traded or released, the contract will keep Murray in Arizona through to the 2028 NFL season.
Murray is set to make $30 million in 2022, $39 million in 2023, $38.9 million in 2024, $32.6 million in 2025, $42.5 million in 2026, $36.3 million in 2027, and $46.3 million in 2028. Of Murray’s $230.5 million contract, $160 million is guaranteed.
In signing the contract, Murray is now the second highest paid player in the entire NFL. The highest paid player is the reigning most valuable player Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers. In June, Rodgers signed a three-year contract worth $150.8 million.

In 2021, Murray completed 333 passes in 481 attempts for 3787 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also had 88 rushes for 423 yards and five touchdowns. For his career, Murray has completed 1057 passes in 1581 attempts for 11480 yards, 70 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.
One weakness in the early stages of Murray’s career was his mobility. As a rookie, he was sacked 48 times which led the NFL. In the last two seasons, Murray has been sacked a combined total of 58 times.
There will be a problem for Murray and the Cardinals in the early stages of the 2022 NFL regular season. That is because Arizona will be without their top wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who has been suspended for six games. It was determined that Hopkins violated the NFL performance enhancing drug policy.
