The Green Bay Packers knew they had some work to do to improve their wide receiver position after losing their star wideout Davante Adams in their trade with the Las Vegas Raiders and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency to the Kansas City Chiefs. This past week the Packers came to terms with Sammy Watkins to a one-year deal worth $4 million, and this acquisition appears to satisfy Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers according to Souryadeep Mazumder of sportskeeda.com on Monday.
Rodgers played a key role in the Packers signing Watkins according to Jordan Schultz of The Game Day NFL. Schultz stated via Twitter, that Rodgers loves Watkins’s talent.
The Packers become Watkins’s fifth National Football League team. He previously played with the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and Baltimore Ravens.
Last year in Baltimore, Watkins actually had the worst season in his eight-year NFL career. He had 27 catches for 394 yards and one touchdown. He had a season-high 96 yards in a 33-27 Ravens loss to the Raiders on September 13.
Watkins’s best NFL season was his second NFL season. In 2015 with the Bills, he had career-highs in receptions (60), receiving yards (1047), and touchdown catches (nine). In five of Watkins’s 13 games in 2015, he reached 100 yards in receiving. On November 8, 2015, he had eight catches for 168 yards and one touchdown in a 33-17 Buffalo win over the Miami Dolphins.
A native of Fort Myers, Florida, Watkins played his college football at Clemson. At 28 years of age, time will tell if Watkins still has more skill in the tank and if last season was a one off. Expect more than the 27 catches he had with the Ravens a year ago, especially if Aaron Rodgers has anything to do with it.
