Stephen Curry becomes 69th player to record 5000 NBA assists

We all know what a wonderful shot maker and three-point shooter Stephen Curry has been over the years. However, one skill that at times has been underrated in Curry’s game is his ability to dish out the basketball when required.

On Sunday, Curry became the 69th player in National Basketball Association history to record 5000 assists. He achieved the mark in a 119-107 Warriors win in Sacramento against the Kings. Curry led both teams in points and assists in the contest as he had 27 points and 10 assists for the double-double.

Curry’s 5000th assist came when he threw the basketball at a long distance to Damion Lee of Baltimore, Maryland for a three-pointer with about five and a half minutes left in the first half. The scoring play for the Warriors was a family affair as Lee is the brother-in-law of Curry. Lee is married to Stephen Curry’s sister Sydel.

Curry is the Warriors all-time leader in assists. He has 150 more assists than Guy Rodgers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who is second on the list with 4855 helpers. Rodgers recorded his 4855 assists when the Warriors played in Philadelphia and then San Francisco the first time, from 1958 to 1966. In addition to being the Warriors’ all-time leader in assists, Curry leads the Warriors all-time in three-point field goals made (2846),  points (18527), and free throw percentage (.907).

So far this season, the Warriors are one of the three teams with a record of three wins and zero losses. The other two teams are the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets are 3-0 for the first time in franchise history.
