The Sacramento Kings were not the only team to deliver an impressive upset over the weekend in the National Basketball Association. So too were the Dallas Mavericks.
Heading into their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night, the Mavericks were a 15 point underdog. However, it was the Mavericks that came through with an impressive 130-120 victory.
It has been a relatively tough season for the Mavericks. You could make the argument it has been tough in Dallas ever since the questionable Luka Doncic deal. On this Sunday, we saw what the Mavericks youth were capable of, led by first overall pick and small forward Cooper Flagg of Newport, Maine.Â
Flagg led the Mavericks with 27 points. He was one of six Mavericks players to reach double digits in points. The other five were small forward Naji Marshall of Atlantic City, New Jersey (25 points), power forward P.J. Washington of Louisville, Kentucky (20 points), point guard Brandon Williams of Los Angeles, California (12 points off the bench), Canadian point guard Ryan Nembhard of Aurora, Ontario (11 points) and shooting guard John Poulakidas of Naperville, Illinois (10 points).
The most impressive quarter for the Mavericks in the victory was the third quarter. In this 12 minute span, the Mavericks outscored the Cavaliers 40-27.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to a record of 23 wins and 45 losses. The Cavaliers dropped to a record of 41 wins and 27 losses.
Even though Dallas won on Sunday night as the underdog, they could not keep the momentum going into Monday. In the second game of a back-to-back, the Mavericks lost to the New Orleans Pelicans 129-111.
