Maja Stark of Skurup, Sweden is a major champion. On Sunday, Stark won the 2025 United States Women’s Open from the Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wisconsin.
Stark, who was the round three leader at -7, shot a score of even par in round four to claim her first major championship of her career. In fact, a score of one-over-par would have been sufficient, as she beat her closest competitors by two strokes each. Two-time major champion Nelly Korda of Bradenton, Florida, and Rio Takeda of Koshi, Japan were tied for second place at -5. Meanwhile, major champions Mao Saigo of Funabashi, Japan, and Ruoning Yin of Kunming, China, and Hyejin Choi of Gimhae, South Korea were tied for fourth place at -4. Korda won the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship, and the 2024 Chevron Championship, Saigo won the 2025 Chevron Championship, and Yin won the 2023 Women’s PGA Championship.
Stark had three birdies and three bogeys on Sunday. She birdied the sixth, 11th, and 14th holes, and bogeyed the seventh, 17th, and 18th holes. In an interesting twist, Stark bogeyed two par fives as she posted a score of six on the seventh and 18th holes.
In the history of women’s golf, there have now been six female golfers who have won a major championship. Stark follows Liseotte Neumann of Finspang (1988 United States Women’s Open), Helen Alfredsson of Gothenburg (1993 Kraft Nabisco Championship), Annika Sorenstam of Bro (1995, 1996, and 2006 United States Women’s Open, 2001, 2002 and 2005 Kraft Nabisco Championship, 2003, 2004, and 2005 LPGA Championship and 2003 Women’s British Open), Anna Nordqvist of Eskilstuna (2009 LPGA Championship, 2017 Evian Championship and 2021 Women’s British Open), and Pernilla Lindberg of Bolinas (2018 ANA Inspiration).
