Luke List wins 2022 Farmers Insurance Open
February 1, 2022

At the age of 37, Luke List of Seattle, Washington is a first-time winner on the PGA Tour. In a rare PGA Tournament that ended on Saturday, rather than the traditional Sunday, List defeated Will Zalatoris of San Francisco, California, in a playoff, to win the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego, California.
List and Zalatoris both entered the playoff at -15. On the first playoff hole, which was the par-five 18th hole, List collected a birdie, while Zalatoris only notched a par.
Thirteen other golfers were in the hunt. The reigning U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm of Spain, Australia’s Jason Day, and American Cameron Tringale finished at -14. Those at -13 were Chile’s Joaquin Niemann, England’s Justin Rose and Aaron Rai, South Korea’s Sungjae Im, and American Pat Perez. Those at -12 were Americans Austin Smotherman, Michael Thompson, Taylor Montgomery, and Billy Horschel, along with South Korea’s Si Woo Kim.
The PGA Tour needs to be praised for ending the tournament on Saturday. They knew they would be hammered in the television ratings, if they ended the event on Sunday because the majority of Americans would be watching the AFC and NFC Championship.
The PGA Tour has already made adjustments, as they have ended their FedEx Cup Playoffs earlier in recent years so they do not compete on Sunday against the start of the National Football League season. The Canadian Football League has a lot to learn from the PGA Tour, because they should not have their playoffs and Grey Cup on Sunday in November either.
