We are now at the midway point of the 2025 Chevron Championship in The Woodlands, Texas, 28 miles north of Houston, and Liu Yan of China remains the leader. Yan was the co-leader alongside Haeran Ryu of South Korea after round one, and now has the lead to herself at -7.
Yan is in first place despite only shooting a score of even par on Friday. However, the biggest story of the entire day was the fact Yan made a double eagle on the par five eighth hole. Yan’s tee shot went 330 yards. She then made her 175 yard approach shot for a score of two on a par five.
According to Tod Leonard of Golf Digest, there is no video available for the albatross. Unfortunately, the television coverage and focus for women’s golf continues to take a back seat to men’s golf.
Yan is the fifth golfer of all-time to make an albatross at a major in women’s golf. She follows Canadian Dawn Coe-Jones of Campbell River, British Columbia (1993 du Maurier Classic in London, Ontario), Asa Gottmo of Sweden (2002 Women’s British Open), Karen Stupples of England (2004 Women’s British Open), and Vikki Laing of Scotland (2014 Women’s British Open).
Also in round one, Yan had four bogeys and one birdie. She bogeyed the first, sixth, ninth, and 17th holes, and birdied the 18th hole.
There are currently 16 other golfers in contention. Four players are in second place and one stroke back at -6. They are Mao Saigo of Japan, Hyo-joo Kim of South Korea, and Americans Lindy Duncan and Sarah Schmelzel. Four more golfers are in sixth place and two strokes back at -5. There you can find Manon De Roey of Belgium, Haeran Ryu of South Korea, Hye-jin Choi of South Korea, and Angel Yin of the United States. Then eight golfers are three strokes back at -4. There you have South Korea’s So-mi Lee, Australia’s Minjee Lee, Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, American Elizabeth Szokol and Lexi Thompson, Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn, and China’s Weiwei Zhang and Ruoning Yin.
