The second round of the 2023 Women’s PGA Championship has been completed and we have a new leader. After 36 holes, Leona Maguire of County Cavan, Ireland has the lead at -5.
On Friday, Maguire shot a score of three-under-par 68. She had five birdies and two bogeys. Maguire birdied the fourth, sixth, seventh, ninth, and 17th holes, and bogeyed the fifth and 15th holes. In the first round on Thursday, she had four birdied and two bogeys. Maguire birdied the sixth, seventh, 11th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the eighth and 13th holes.
Six golfers at this time are in contention. Mel Reid of Derby, England is in a three-way tie for second place. Reid is one stroke back at -4 alongside Norway’s Celine Borge, and China’s Xiyu Lin. For Borge, this is the first time she has ever made the cut at a major, and she is only one stroke back of Maguire.
Two-time major champion Minjee Lee of Perth, Australia and first round leader Lee-Anne Pace of Paarl, South Africa are two strokes back at -3 and tied for fifth place. Lee won the 2021 Evian Masters and the 2022 United States Women’s Open. It was a sizzling back nine for Lee on Friday as she birdied the 11th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes to go from one over par to three under par.
Ruoning Yin of China is all alone in seventh place at -2. The fact that Lin and Yin are both in contention is very interesting. The two players from China currently live in Orlando, and Lin has rented out her old house in central Florida to Yin.
