Lachie Whitfield has been traded from Greater Western Sydney to Carlton, with five draft picks changing hands in a deal confirmed on Tuesday, AFL.com.au reported.
The 32-year-old defender got his wish to join the Blues, according to AFL.com.au. Carlton receives Whitfield plus picks 31 and 50, while Greater Western Sydney receives picks 25 and 26 and a 2028 third-round selection.
Zero Hanger also reported the same five-pick swap and said Whitfield has signed a three-year deal, matching AFL.com.au’s confirmation that he has joined Carlton on a three-year contract.
Whitfield has played 278 games for the Giants, including 21 this season, since being taken with pick 1 in the 2012 national draft, AFL.com.au said.
How the deal got done
GWS had been firm that it wanted a first-round pick for the contracted defender. AFL.com.au said Carlton managed to land the move through pick slides, keeping picks 13 and 18 off the table because both are needed to match a bid on father-son prospect Cody Walker.

Giants list shake-up continues
Whitfield joins fellow veterans Toby Greene, Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer in departing the Giants this off-season, while ruck Kieren Briggs has also left, AFL.com.au reported. Between the five, they have played 1088 AFL games.
For Carlton, Whitfield is the club’s second arrival this off-season after free agent Joel Amartey, with Wil Parker set to join as a delisted free agent and Walker expected via the draft next month.
