Rowan Marshall has been traded from St Kilda to Geelong, with the Saints receiving pick No.14 in this year’s national draft after the two clubs struck a deal on Thursday morning, 8 October.

The Cats also get a 2028 third-round pick back from St Kilda as part of the deal, AFL.com.au reported.

“Geelong and St Kilda have reached an agreement for Rowan Marshall. Pick 14 to the Saints. F3 in 2028 back to the Cats. Done deal,” AFL.com.au’s Josh Gabelich posted on X.

Zero Hanger also reported the completed trade, citing AFL Media.

Marshall gets his wish

The contracted ruckman had asked for a move to Geelong for the second straight off-season, and he escalated the standoff this week when he stayed away from St Kilda’s best and fairest night on Monday.

According to AFL.com.au, St Kilda had been asking for a player to be included in the deal, which Geelong didn’t want to do. The clubs got it done after negotiating on Thursday morning.

Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie had made the club’s position clear on the opening day of the trade period.

“We have committed to Rowan that we will try to make it happen,” Mackie told reporters.

He also said “the pick 14 is of real value to us”, which is the selection the Cats have now handed over to land Marshall.

A decade at the Saints

Marshall played 177 games for St Kilda after the Saints took him as a rookie from North Ballarat at 21. The 30-year-old now heads down the highway to Kardinia Park after a decade at Moorabbin.

He gives Chris Scott another experienced ruckman following Rhys Stanley’s retirement, and he is the latest big addition to a busy Geelong off-season. The Cats signed Toby Greene as a free agent and traded for Essendon’s Jordan Ridley on Wednesday.

Zero Hanger noted St Kilda now holds two first-round picks in next month’s national draft, No.8 and No.14.

Geelong has since confirmed the trade in an official club release, which said the Cats have received Marshall and a future third-round pick (2028) from the Saints, giving pick 14 back in the exchange. Mackie, Geelong’s executive general manager of football, said in the release that Marshall “brings a wealth of experience to our ruck and key position stocks”.

St Kilda also confirmed the deal, saying it received pick 14 in return for Marshall and its 2028 third-round selection.

“We are pleased to have achieved this by bringing in another first round selection, alongside our existing pick at 8,” St Kilda general manager of football Lenny Hayes said in the club’s release.
