‘Keep your word’: Wissa begs Brentford to let him leave

Yoane Wissa has taken a leaf from Alexander Isak’s book and taken to social media in a bid to move this Premier League transfer window, demanding Brentford “keep their word” and let him join Newcastle immediately.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, the Bees striker said the club had “significantly changed its position” after originally “putting in writing” that he could depart should a fair offer be made.

Newcastle United – who today sold Isak to Liverpool for £130 million – have been pushing to sign Wissa all window, most recently offering £35 million plus several add-ons to acquire the 28-year-old forward. Brentford had rejected that deal, and Wissa believes it goes against the agreement he had made with club officials between seasons.

“Earlier this summer, I held open discussions with the club’s senior management, including key directors, and the new head coach,” he wrote.

“I made clear my intention to explore a new challenge.

“During these conversations, it was confirmed to me and my representatives that the club would not stand in my way if a reasonable offer was received. This was also put in writing. Yet as the window comes to an end, the club has now significantly changed its position, going against what was communicated.

“This has left me in a difficult position… the commitment that I could leave this summer has not been fulfilled.

“I must do what I feel is right for my career and family and insist that Brentford honour, keep their word to let me join a new club and at a fair price.”

Wissa added: “Being made to stay beyond this summer will only tarnish four wonderful years at this incredible club and so l ask Brentford’s owners and directors to now keep their word to let me leave in the final hours of the window.”

The social media statement very much leaves the ball in Brentford’s court, with Newcastle’s latest offer still sitting on the table. With less than 24 hours now remaining for the transfer window, both clubs will have to act quickly to actually get the deal over the line – if the Bees want to relinquish their striker before the campaign has really got underway.

Wissa has yet to play for Brentford in 2025/26, though, with head coach Keith Andrews seemingly choosing not to play him. Before last week’s win over Aston Villa, Andrews explained he wanted his players to be “absolutely committed.”

He has also not been training with the squad at all in the preseason or into the season proper.

The 28-year-old may also have been worried about Newcastle signing Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart on Saturday.

That said, with Isak leaving, the Magpies do still need another reliable striker in their stable. With Wissa being Premier League proven, having scored 45 goals in 137 league appearances with Brentford, he may complement Woltemade perfectly.
