Bulldogs have finally made a call on fullback Tracey and his long-term future

The Canterbury Bulldogs have finally decided what to do with Connor Tracey after some lengthy delays, with the club expected to announce a two-year contract extension for the starting fullback this week.

The Sydney Morning Herald has this week suggested a deal was signed some days ago, over the weekend, with Belmore powerbrokers rushing through the signature process after Tracey’s season start. Through the opening rounds (where the Bulldogs have played three times), Tracey has a try, recorded 10 tackle busts, and made three line breaks.

There had originally been suggestions that the Bulldogs wanted to wait until at least Round 6 to see how Tracey was playing, but his undeniable form at the start of the campaign has forced their hand as rivals started licking their lips. St George Illawarra at least had already reached out to speak to Tracey.

As is fast becoming tradition for the Bulldogs, the club’s general manager of football, Phil “Gus” Gould, had taken Tracey for a Chinese meal at Canterbury Leagues during the week to thrash out the finer deal details.

Tracey, who has been able to speak to rivals since November 1 last season, has never really canvased options.

“It sounds clichéd, but if you’re thinking about that stuff going into a game, then you’re probably thinking about the wrong things,” he told FOX Sports some days ago when speaking about his free agency.

“I’m sure it will get sorted, as these things normally do if you’re playing well.”

(Gus Gould also confirmed on 100% Footy on Monday evening that a deal had been tabled.)

“I’m always building my game, but in that Canberra game, I had a few try saves, and they’re an important part of my job. Also, the attacking side of things will come along,” Tracey added after his last outing.

“I think there’s better to come. I’m getting older in my career, but I’ve just recently nailed down a consistent first-grade level.

“Every year I’m getting better, every week I’m trying to get better.”
