The Boston Celtics received horrendous news on Monday when it was announced that their star shooting guard Jaylen Brown of Marietta, Georgia has a torn ligament in his broken wrist which will require surgery, according to Tim Bontemps of ESPN on Monday. The loss of Brown is huge for the Celtics in their quest to go deep into the 2021 NBA Playoffs.
Brown had been out the last three games with an ankle injury he suffered while colliding with teammate Jayson Tatum on May 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers. However, it appears Brown has had a sore wrist for a while. According to Tom Westerholm of boston.com, Brown could have suffered the injury against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 27.
In both games where Brown got hurt, the Celtics lost. The Celtics lost 119-115 to the Thunder, while they lost 129-119 to the Trail Blazers. In the Thunder win over the Celtics, they snapped a 14-game losing streak, which was a franchise record.
It has been a marvelous season for Brown. So far in 2020-21, he is averaging a career-high 24.7 points per game, and has career-highs in assists per game (3.4), field goal percentage (.484), three-point percentage (.397), and free-throw percentage (.764).
Brown is the second Celtics player to have wrist surgery this past year. Romeo Langford of New Albany, IN had the same surgery done in September.
With the loss of Brown, expect Marcus Smart to get a lot more action. The veteran guard from Flower Mound, Texas, is averaging 13.1 points per game in 2020-21.
The Celtics are seventh in the Eastern Conference. They are two games above the .500 mark at 35 wins and 33 losses.
