May 1, 2021

According to the Associated Press on Thursday, the Jacksonville Jaguars named quarterback Trevor Lawrence of Knoxville, Tennessee their first overall pick in the 2021 National Football League Draft. Lawrence becomes the first player ever from the University of Clemson Tigers to be drafted first overall.
Lawrence had been with the Tigers the last three seasons. In 2020 as a junior, he completed 231 passes in 334 attempts for 3153 yards, 24 touchdowns, and five interceptions. In three seasons with Clemson, Lawrence completed 758 passes in 1138 attempts for 10098 yards, 90 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions.

This was also the first time ever in the history of the NFL Draft that the Jacksonville Jaguars had the first overall pick. The Jaguars had the worst record in 2020 at one win and 15 losses. They won their first game by beating the Indianapolis Colts 27-20, before losing 15 straight games.
There were some very intriguing storylines from the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. The biggest story was the fact that the New England Patriots selected Mac Jones 15th overall. Many projected Jones to be drafted third by the San Francisco 49ers, and the fact the star quarterback from the University of Alabama went all the way down to number 15 was mind-boggling. The 49ers meanwhile selected quarterback Trey Lance of North Dakota State third overall instead.
Meanwhile, Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith, a wide receiver from the Crimson Tide, was drafted 10th by the Philadelphia Eagles. Then with the 11th pick, the Chicago Bears traded up to draft Justin Fields out of Ohio State. There were some recent question marks surrounding Fields because he recently revealed he had epilepsy as a child.Â
