For the second straight year, Italy has won the Davis Cup. After defeating Australia in the 2023 Davis Cup Final in Malaga, Spain, Italy beat the Netherlands in the 2024 Davis Cup Final in Malaga, Spain on Sunday.
In the finals, Matteo Berretini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2. Then world number one Jannik Sinner beat Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, 7-6, 6-2. It was quite the year for Sinner, who won the 2024 Australian Open, the 2024 Rotterdam Open, the 2024 Miami Open, the 2024 Halle Open, the 2024 Cincinnati Open, the United States Open, the 2024 Shanghai Masters and the 2024 ATP World Tour Finals.
In Berrettini’s win over van de Zandschulp, the serve made a significant difference. Berrettini had 16 aces, while van de Zandschulp only had three. In Sinner’s win over Griekspoor, the serve was once again a major factor. Sinner had 15 aces compared to six for Griekspoor.
In the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, Italy won their quarterfinal match by beating Argentina two matches to one. The Italians then beat Australia in two singles matches in the semifinals.
This is the third time Italy has won the Davis Cup. In addition to winning in 2023, they also won in 1976.
This is also the 12th time in tennis history that the same nation won the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup in the same year. Last week in the Billie Jean King Cup finals in Malaga, Italy beat Slovakia. Other nations to accomplish the feat are Australia (1964, 1965, and 1973), the United States (1969, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1990), the Czech Republic (2012), and Russia (2021).
