Hinako Shibuno leads after the first round of the 2022 Women’s British Open

Hinako Shibuno of Okayama, Japan is the leader after the first round of the 2022 AIG Women’s British Open. After the first round on Thursday, Shibuno posted a first round score of -6.
Shibuno had eight birdies and two bogeys in her opening 18 holes for a score of 65. She birdied the first, second, third, fifth, ninth, 11th, 16th, and 17th holes, and bogeyed the fourth and 14th holes.
Eight more golfers are in contention at this time. Jessica Korda of the United States is alone in second place at -5. Louise Duncan of Scotland and Gaby Lopez of Mexico are tied for third place at -4. Meanwhile, there is a five-way tie for fifth place at -3. There you can find Sweden’s Maja Stark, South Korea’s In Gee Chun, England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff, France’s Celine Boutier and Australia’s Minjee Lee.

Nicknamed Cinderella, Shibuno has had great success at the Women’s British Open in the past. She won the 2019 Women’s British Open when the major took place at the Woburn Golf Club in Milton Keynes. Three years ago Shibuno posted a four round score of -18 to beat American Lizette Salas by a stroke. Shibuno’s -18 was the second best four-round score in the history of the Women’s British Open while the tournament has been a major. Karen Stupples of Dover, Kent, England, has the record as she shot a four-round score of -19 to win the 2004 Women’s British Open.
Of the eight other players in contention and chasing Shibuno, there are two major champions. Chun won the 2015 U.S. Women’s Open, the 2016 Evian Championship, and the 2022 Women’s PGA Championship. Lee won the 2021 Evian Masters and the 2022 United States Women’s Open.Â
