Hideki Matsuyama wins 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship

The 2024 FedEx Playoffs began this past weekend on the PGA Tour with the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. The winner was Hideki Matsuyama of Matsuyama, Japan. Matsuyama posted a four round score of -17, and in the process won $3.6 million.

The 2021 Masters champion had a first round score of five-under-par 65, a second and third round score of six-under-par 64, and a fourth round score of even. Matsuyama’s most notable score was an eagle on the par five third hole in the third round on Saturday.

World number two Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California finished in second place at -15. It has been quite the year for Schauffele, as he won two major titles–the PGA Championship and British Open. Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland of Norway, the 2023 FedEx Cup champion finished in a tie for second place with Schauffele at -15, and the 2022 and 2024 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey finished three strokes back all alone in fourth place at -14.

This was Matsuyama’s 10th career victory on the PGA Tour, and second victory in 2024. The first win was at the Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. Interestingly, in both tournaments Matsuyama posted a winning score of -17. It has since been announced that the Riviera Country Club will be the host venue for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in men’s and women’s golf.

This is the first of three events of the FedEx playoffs. The FedEx Cup Playoffs continues this weekend in Denver, Colorado, and concludes Labour Day weekend in Atlanta.
