CHRIS Waller’s decision to bypass last year’s Melbourne Cup with Francesco Guardi could prove to be a masterstroke.
After Francesco Guardi won last year’s Moonee Valley Cup, most expected Waller would head to the Melbourne Cup but he decided he needed another year under his belt.

Judging by his first-up tenth in the Winx Stakes at Randwick, he’s on track for a successful tilt at this year’s Melbourne Cup.
He stretched out impressively in the run home running his last 400 metres in 22.98 seconds and finished only four lengths from the winner.
PlayUp has him as a $14 chance for the Melbourne Cup.

Another top stayer Montefilia, also now with Chris Waller ran her last 400 metres in 22.41 seconds signifying she is in for a good campaign.
Impressive Irish stayer Vauban, who won his last start by 7.5 lengths is heading to Australia.
The Willie Mullins trained stayer is an $8 favourite for the Melbourne Cup.
The second line of betting is shared by two horses who are guaranteed a start in the race having won golden ticket races and they are the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Goldman and the Grahame Begg trained Lunar Flare.
Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip is a $23 chance.
