Patrick Cantlay sets PGA record for most consecutive rounds in the 60s

According to ESPN on Thursday, Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California set the PGA record for most consecutive rounds in the 60s with 20 on Thursday. Cantlay shot a 10-under-par 62, and is the co-leader after round one with Lee Hodges of Huntsville, Alabama at the 2022 American Express Championship in La Quinta, California. Cantlay broke the record previously set by Viktor Hovland of Oslo, Norway, who had 19 consecutive rounds of golf in the 60s as a PGA Tour rookie in 2019.

Cantlay is currently fourth in the Official World Golf Rankings, behind Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, and Dustin Johnson. He holds that ranking despite never having won a major in his career to date. The primary reason why Cantlay is number four, is because he was the FedEx Cup champion in 2021.

Cantlay’s remarkable stretch of golf began in the second round of the 2021 World Golf Championship St. Jude Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee in August. Cantlay shot a three-under-par 67. That was followed by scores of one-under-par 69, and another round of three-under-par 67 in Memphis.

Then Cantlay posted 12 consecutive rounds of golf in the 60s in three FedEx events. At the 2021 Northern Trust at the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey, he had rounds of 68, 67, 69, 68. Then at the 2021 BMW Championship at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, Cantlay had scores of 66, 63, 66, and 66. Cantlay’s final PGA event in 2021 was the Tour Championship in Atlanta, where he had rounds of 67, 66, 67, 69.

All five rounds of golf Cantlay has been involved in during 2022, he has posted scores in the 60s. Prior to his 62 on Thursday, he had scores of 66, 67, 66, and 67 at the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
