The 2022 United States Open has been determined for 2022 and Matt Fitzpatrick of Sheffield, England is the champion. The co-leader after round three shot a fourth round score of two-under-par 68, and finished the tournament at -6.
Fitzpatrick defeated world number one and 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey as well as Will Zalatoris of San Francisco, California by one stroke. Meanwhile, 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama of Matsuyama, Japan was all alone in fourth place at -3.
In the final round, Fitzpatrick had five birdies and three bogeys. He birdied the third, fifth, eighth, 13th, and 15th holes, and bogeyed the sixth, 10th and 11th holes.
What was miraculous about Fitzpatrick’s round on Sunday was his accuracy. He hit 17 of 18 fairways in regulation, and when he got into trouble, Fitzpatrick was simply fantastic. He made the green from a tough approach shot from the rough on the 15th hole, and then had an outstanding shot from the bunker on the 18th hole.
Fitzpatrick becomes the ninth Englishman to win the United States Open, which now has occurred 122 times. He follows Horace Rawlins of Shanklin (1895), Joe Lloyd of Hoylake (1897), Harry Vardon of London (1900), George Sargent of Brockham (1909), Jim Barnes of Lelant (1921), Cyril Walker of Manchester (1924), Tony Jacklin of Scunthorpe (1970), and Justin Rose of London (2013).
This was Fitzpatrick’s first win as a professional in the United States. However, this was not Fitzpatrick’s first win in the United States. Before being a professional, Fitzpatrick won the 2013 United States Amateur, where he beat Australian Oliver Goss 4&3. Miraculously, the 2013 U.S. Amateur and the 2022 United States Open were both on the same course–the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
