John Rahm moves into first in Official World Golf Rankings
June 24, 2021
It was an eventful Sunday for more reasons than one for new United States Open champion John Rahm of Spain. According to Arjun Athreya of Essentially Sports on Monday, Rahm passed Dustin Johnson of the United States into first in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Rahm now has 479.4 points, while Johnson is now second with 408.01 points. At the U.S. Open this past weekend at Torrey Pines, Johnson finished tied for 19th place at +2, and eight strokes back of Rahm. However, the 19th place finish for Johnson was his best result at a major this year as he missed the cut at the Masters in April, and the PGA Championship in South Carolina in June.
Rahm has been extremely consistent in 2021 so far. He now has eight top-10 finishes after finishing tied for seventh at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, tied for seventh again at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in January (same location as the 2021 U.S. Open), tied for fifth at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera in February, tied for ninth at the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in March, tied for fifth at the World Matchplay Golf Championship in Austin, Texas in March, tied for fifth at the Masters, and tied for eighth at the PGA Championship.

This is the second time in Rahm’s career that he has been number one in the world. He was ranked number one for two weeks in 2020 as well. He is also the second Spaniard to be ranked number one. Seve Ballesteros was ranked number one for 61 weeks from 1986 to 1989. Sergio Garcia’s highest ranking was second, while Jose Maria Olazabal was also ranked as high as number two.
