June 16, 2021

Garrick Higgo of Johannesburg, South Africa is a first-time winner on the PGA Tour. On Sunday, Higgo defeated six other golfers by a single stroke to win the 2021 Palmetto Championship, at the Congaree Golf Club in Jasper County, South Carolina.
Higgo had a four-round score of -11. The six players tied for second place and one stroke back at -10 were Americans Bo Van Pelt, Hudson Swafford, Chesson Hadley, and Doc Redman, as well as England’s Tyrrell Hatton, and Colombia’s Jhonattan Vegas. Americans Ryan Armour and David Lipsky were only two strokes back at -9 and tied for eighth place.
Four more golfers tied for 10th place at -8, and three strokes back of Higgo. There you found two-time major champion Dustin Johnson of the United States, as well as American Pat Perez, England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, and South Africa’s Erik Van Rooyen. Johnson’s two majors came at the 2016 United States Open and 2020 Masters.

Speaking of the U.S. Open, one might have found it strange that Johnson, who is ranked number one in the Official World Golf Rankings, was competing a week before golf’s third major of the year. One must remember that Johnson is originally from the state of South Carolina, and has not won on the PGA Tour since winning the Masters in November. Now Johnson will be traveling cross-country from the east coast to the west coast for the U.S. Open, as it takes place at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California starting Thursday.
Higgo meanwhile was the second South African to win on the PGA Tour in 2020-21. In February, Brendan Grace won the Puerto Rico Open.
