Dustin Johnson delivers with a record setting performance at 2020 Masters

Dustin Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina began the fourth round of the 2020 Masters with an opportunity to make the record books. After a four-under-par 68 to close his round, he did just that.

Johnson’s four-round score of -20 was the best ever 72-hole score in Masters history, setting the record previously held by Tiger Woods in 1997 and Jordan Spieth in 2005. Woods and Spieth shared the record at -18.

Johnson also tied the record for the best ever score in major golf history over four rounds. Jason Day of Beaudesert, Australia had a score of -20 at the 2015 PGA Championship, and Henrik Stenson of Gothenburg, Sweden matched the total of -20 at the 2016 British Open.

On Sunday, Johnson actually got off to a slow start. He bogeyed the fourth and fifth holes. The comfortable four-shot lead Johnson had on the field dropped to one shot over South Korea’s Sung-jae Im, and two shots over Australian Cameron Smith. However, over the next 13 holes, Johnson was flawless as he went five-under-par.  He went from -15 to -20, and beat Im and Smith by five strokes.

It was also a fantastic weekend for Smith, as he made history of his own. He became the first golfer in Masters history to have four rounds in the 60’s. He shot a five-under-par 67 in round one, a four-under-par 68 in round two, and back-to-back rounds of three-under-par 69 in rounds three and four.

Another major reason for Johnson’s victory was because of his success on the second hole. It is there where he recorded two eagles (one in the first round, and the other in the third round). Johnson also almost had a double eagle (also known as an albatross) on Saturday. There has only been one albatross on the second hole in Masters history, and that was accomplished by Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa in 2012.

This was Johnson’s second career major title. The first was at the 2016 U.S. Open. By winning the Masters, Johnson continues to be ranked number one in the world.
