March 25, 2022
The Sydney autumn carnival moves to Randwick with 4 Group 1 races! The Doncaster, Derby, TJ Smith and Inglis all host terrific fields of some of the nations best horses. I’ve picked out a 1st class sprinter that looks set to spring back to form in the TJ Smith and a lightweight Doncaster hope from the Waterhouse & Bott yard.

Ā Randwick Race 8 – Masked Crusader
Masked Crusader has failed in two attempts up the Flemington straight this preparation where is has worked to the line strongly but not looked like winning. I believe he will be much better suited back at Randwick where he has a career record of 9:3-4-0. He also handles wet tracks but I think he will be closer to peaking for this run compared to the likes of Nature Strip, Shelby Sixtysix and Eduardo considering he went into his 1st up run without a trial. The barrier 1 isn’t ideal but he lacks so much gate speed Pike should still be able to get him back outside all runners.

Randwick Race 9 – Converge
Converge profiles nicely for a Randwick G1 Handicap. The Waterhouse/Bott 3yo gets in with the lightest weight in the race with only 49.5kg. He comes back from 2000m, where he ran 2nd to Anamoe in the Rosehill Guineas, to the Randwick mile which is a big tick considering most experienced trainers will tell you that you need a 2000m horse to win this race. He’s won and ran 2nd in two career heavy track starts and has a beautiful barrier where he should camp just behind the speed and be able to use a strong finish with no weight on his back.
