FREE: Belmont Selections: Saturday 16th July

Monster 10 race card at Belmont Saturday and one that appeals from a betting perspective with a number of horses looking well-placed to strike across the day. Track will be rain affected after the rain Perth metro copped Thursday, should be a soft 5/6 and the rail goes out to the 6m position.

Race 1 – 11:34AM FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK PLATE (1200 METRES)

1. Aztec Ruler – 13. Wild Belle – 4. Union Jack – 6. Hear My Prayer

Aztec Ruler

Aztec Ruler was an incredibly impressive winner on debut, posting a proper 2yo figure in doing so. Looked to have too much ground to make up on some sharp 2yo 1000m types, namely Revitup, but absolutely flew home to get up on the post. The on-pace runners filling out the placings adds even more strength to that performance. Up to the 1200m only suits better for him, draws for a midfield run and this really isn’t much deeper. Looks a very smart 2yo.

Race 2 – 12:09PM TABTOUCH WESTSPEED PLATINUM HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

5. Speedy Miss – 3. Flicka’s Chance – 2. Arnie’s Boy – 4. Inflation

Speedy Miss

Has returned to racing really well Speedy Miss. 1st up in a 1300m event in this grade, came from last to hit the line in the best closing splits of the race into 6th, was underdone and beaten half a length there by Arnie’s Boy, gets 1.5kgs on that runner here. Last start, rolled forward to park leaders back on a very wet day in a much deeper race, really ground it out well to the line to run 3rd behind promising Peters Investments filly Frigid. This is a drop back in grade in terms of quality, she has won and ran well off the 7 days previously and the booking of CJP signals some real intent for me here. The barrier is obviously the query drawn 11 of 12 and where she gets to in the run with Clint most likely needing some luck to find a spot, but with some luck on her side, she looks very well placed.

Flicka’s Chance

Back/save here with Flicka’s Chance. Much better suited at the 1400m, finds a really soft map and gets 1.5kgs in his advantage on another well fancied runner here in Arnie’s Boy. Think the drop back to the 1400 suits him better than it does Chris Parnham’s mount.

8. Sluice Box – 7. Reliable Star – 10. Sugar Cain – 1. Black Shadow

Sluice Box

Racing in a rich vein of form is Sluice Box. Although I was in the Last Of The Line camp when he was victorious last start, having watched that replay numerous times its hard to argue against the fact that Sluice Box should have won that race. Back out to the 2000m, a distance he loves, O’Donnell hops aboard, maps to arguably get the run of the race parked in behind the leaders from the draw, he ticks plenty of boxes and is just racing so well. Spanked Reliable Star (2nd favourite here) the last time they met and he gets 2kgs in his favour from that run, just looks a great bet again.

Race 7 – 3:15PM CROWN PERTH HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

2. Capital Flight – 1. Beads – 6. Thomas Magnum – 4. State Of Power

Capital Flight

Stepping out to Saturday 3yo grade for the first time, I have a big opinion of this Coreen Maynard galloper. Has put 3 in a line and it hasn’t just been the visual nature of the wins that have been so impressive, the figures have mirrored similar thoughts and everything in behind him has been coming out and either winning or running very well, he’s been leaving a trail of super strong form. I was more reserved in how bullish I am with My Baby Blue Jean expected to get a soft lead here with only the 53kgs, but with that galloper now a scratching, I can’t see why Brandon Louis can’t bounce to find the front here? There is no real speed drawn underneath him. This is the toughest assignment he has faced, but with some weight relief, a far more favourable map set up here with a key scratching, I’m happy to have a real dip to find out.

Race 10 – 5:00PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

3. Bright Diamond – 6. Nowhiteflag – 7. Creator – 2. Mood Swings

Bright Diamond

Although some reservations with the apprentices at the moment, I struggled to get Bright Diamond marked any longer than $2.70 in my own mark up of this race. With Puli/Nowhiteflag/Mood Swings to no doubt set a cracking tempo, she maps beautifully to just park in behind them stalking the speed they set. Huge merit to the last start performance given the run she had from where she drew up in grade behind Secret Plan who has subsequently won again and think this is another terrific opportunity for Taj to boot home another winner for Peters Investments.
