FREE: Ascot Selections & Staking Plan: Wednesday 2nd March

Bit of rain over the past 12 hours means we could potentially see ourselves on a soft 5 for the first time in a long time over here in the West, however I’m not sure it has been enough for the downgrade to be made. South westerly blowing usually suits those with cover behind the speed. Very open mid-week meeting.

Race 1 – 1:10PM TABTOUCH BETTER YOUR BET MAIDEN (1000 METRES)

1. Capricorn Man – 2. Bird’s The Word – 3. Just Go – 6. Megami

Race 2 – 1:44PM FURPHY BUNBURY CUP AT ASCOT 5TH MARCH HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

2. Metallon – 5. Harmika – 4. Dance Session – 1. Toppa The Mountain

Race 3 – 2:19PM CROWN PERTH MAIDEN (1500 METRES)

3. Dangote – 11. Night Shift – 1. Multinova Man – 2. Maximum Impact

Dangote

Drops back into a maiden out of 3yo grade and has been racing like he is crying out for this distance, running some of the best closing splits from the back of the field at his last couple against better horses than these. He’s still a little green the way he does things, but Brad Parnham should know him well enough by now and think he can be the strongest of these late, stepping up to what I think is a trip he has been looking for.

2.5 Units WIN

Night Shift

Keen to have a little saver in the race, I really liked the way Night Shift hit the line last start at Pinjarra in a race that wasn’t at all run to suit with an apprentice jockey on-board.

Draws better here and gets one of the best senior jockeys on in Shaun McGruddy who can hopefully position up a little closer to the speed, and her late splits from last start signal the rise to the 1500m here shouldn’t pose much of an issue.

1 Unit WIN

Race 4 – 2:55PM AMELIA PARK HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

3. Samsurian – 7. Choice Bid – 5. Marzipan Lad – 6. Sioux City

Race 5 – 3:34PM RELIABLE ASSET MAINTENANCE HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

3. Got Ya – 1. Kaymay – 9. Western Rhythm – 5. Gorgeous Gossip

Race 6 – 4:10PM HEINEKEN 3 HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

3. Alaskan God – 1. Free Solo – 6. Hezapro – 8. Act Innocent

Race 7 – 4:45PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

3. Arno The Fox – 2. Shoes Of Ekraar – 9. Blonde Warrior – 4. There’s A Thought

Arno The Fox

I was on last start and I’m going to butter up again here on Arno The Fox. Just had to do too much work from the gate when caught deep early, he had to really do all the bullocking work just to find himself a position in the breeze once they had already passed the 500. To still be there in the finish I thought was a mighty effort. Liz Strempel knows this horse so well and spaces her runs to perfection, I think from the better draw she can position up leaders back or even one out one back and prove really hard to beat.

1.5 Units WIN

Shoes Of Ekraar

Going to throw another one out at a big price here and that’s Shoes Of Ekraar. You need only go 4 starts back and he actually defeated Arno quite convincingly after settling behind that runner in transit. His fresh effort was disappointing, however that was a much stronger race than this and if he can find a 3 wide with cover moving line and a back to follow into it on the corner, he’s definitely over the odds at $23.00.

0.5 Units WIN

Race 8 – 5:20PM DRUMMOND GOLF HANDICAP (2200 METRES)

5. Without Reason – 4. Winifer – 8. All Man – 9. Poulton Le Sands

Without Reason

I thought Without Reason was superb last Saturday week over the 1800m, only 2nd up there with plenty of condition to gain from the run and hit the line in the race fastest L400/200m splits. Barrier 15 looks sticky and he’s going to need a gem of a steer from Troy Turner, but if he can find him some cover in the run he’s definitely going to be chiming in late.

1.5 Units

Winifer

Was offered no favours in the run last start at a massive price and ran out of his skin after being caught deep throughout. Gets the apprentice off for one of the state’s best seniors in Paul Harvey, the added fitness of the run and a beautiful gate to hold a more prominent spot smothered away midfield.

1 Unit WIN

All Man

Comes out of that same form race as Without Reason and never got any sort of daylight in the straight there. Once again, barrier 16 is sticky to contend with but if Whiting can manage to find him some cover he’s also more than capable of taking this field out, the win prior to last start was terrific and I think the Bakranich stable is really starting to hit its straps.

0.5 Units WIN

Happy to play around with the longest priced runners of the 3 late, no qualms here in backing the drifters in what is a very wide open race to end proceedings.
