According to Dennis Romero of NBC News, former National Football League quarterback Ryan Mallett of Batesville, Arkansas passed away on Tuesday at the age of 35. He reportedly drowned at a Florida beach as he was stuck at a sandbar and was unable to get back to shore. There have now been 12 deaths in the area as there are frequent rip currents which make things difficult for even the very best swimmers in the world to handle. Swimming has actually been prohibited in many areas in the region.
Mallett died at Destin Beach in Florida. He had recently been the head football coach for White Hall High School in Arkansas.
While in the National Football League, Mallett played five seasons from 2012 to 2017. He was with the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens. In 21 games of which eight were starts, Mallett completed 190 passes in 345 attempts for 1835 passing yards, nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Not much of a runner, Mallett had 28 rushes for -5 yards and one rushing touchdown. The rushing touchdown came in a 24-17 Houston Texans loss to the Carolina Panthers on September 20, 2015. Mallett’s career high in passing yards for a single game came on January 3, 2016. He had 292 passing yards for the Ravens in a 24-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
in his junior year of the National Collegiate Athletic Association with the University of Arkansas, Mallett completed 266 passes in 411 attempts for 3869 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He went on to finish seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting, an award won that year by future NFL MVP Cam Newton of Atlanta, Georgia.
