The Denver Nuggets have won the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. Denver has been in the National Basketball Association for 47 years and won the finals in the first time they have been in the finals. On Monday, the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat 94-89 to win the best out of seven series four games to one.
In game five, there were five Nuggets who reached double digits in points. Center Nikola Jokic of Sombor, Serbia led the team with 28 points, as he had a double double with 16 rebounds. Small forward Michael Porter Jr. of Colombia, Missouri had 16 points and 13 rebounds, guard Jamal Murray of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada had 14 points, shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope of Thomaston, Georgia had 11 points, and forward Bruce Brown Jr. of Boston, Massachusetts had 10 points.
Porter Jr. meanwhile tied a playoff career-high with 13 rebounds. He previously had 13 rebounds in game one of the 2023 NBA Finals, a 104-93 Denver win over the Miami Heat.
Jokic meanwhile won the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Players Award. He became the first player in NBA Playoffs history to lead all players in the playoffs in points (600), rebounds (269), and assists (190). Jokic is a two-time NBA MVP, and now he is the NBA Finals MVP.
Meanwhile, one of the biggest stories from game five might have come afterwards. In the postgame celebration, Nuggets head coach Mike Malone stated, “we’re not satisfied with one, we want more.” It will be interesting to see how the Nuggets will be able to respond next season.
