Day 12 Olympic Preview – Aussies in action 8/4

On Day 11 we saw exhilarating victories in men’s basketball, women’s beach volleyball, and men’s field hockey, as well as a guaranteed medal for Australia from a ballet-dancing plumber in men’s lightweight boxing! Seriously, I cannot make this up! Here is what is happening in Day 12 at the Olympic Games from an Australian standpoint.

Swimming–Women’s Marathon Swimming @ 7:30 AM AEST

Australia’s Kareena Lee could be in the mix for a medal in the women’s 10 kilometre swim. This marathon event is seven laps. Lee enters the race after finishing in seventh place at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Lee’s accomplishments were made aware to me from an avid reader of The Sporting Base.

Golf–Women’s First Round @ 8:30 AM AEST

After a remarkable men’s golf tournament where there was an unprecedented seven-way playoff for bronze, women’s golf gets underway on Wednesday. Now the two Australian representatives have something in common. Both Hannah Green and Minjee Lee are major champions. Lee won her major title in the final golf tournament before the Olympic Games– at the Evian Championship in France. Both Aussie golfers will be teeing off alongside fellow major champions. Lee is in a group with Sophia Popov of Germany and Patty Tavatanakit of Thailand at 11:14 A.M., while Green is in a group with Sei Young Kim of South Korea and Danielle Kang of the United States at 11:36 A.M.

Skateboarding–Women’s Park Final @ 1:30 PM

In an event which will be making its Olympic debut, an Australian is a medal contender. Poppy Starr Olsen won the bronze medal at the 2017 X Games in Minneapolis.
