For the second time this season a South Korean golfer has won a women’s major in the United States. After Mirim Lee won the ANA Inspiration last month in Rancho Mirage, California, Sei-young Kim was victorious at the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at the Aronimink Golf Club in Newton Square, Pennsylvania, just outside of the rich American sports city of Philadelphia.

Throughout the tournament, Kim posted a four round score of -14. She beat her closest competitor, fellow South Korean, Inbee Park, by five strokes.

Heading into the final round, Kim had a narrow two-stroke lead over Brooke Henderson of Canada and Anna Nordqvist of Sweden. As Henderson and Nordqvist each struggled on Sunday (Henderson was +2 and Nordqvist was +1), Kim was simply spectacular. She shot a four round score of -7 for a round of 63. Kim birdied the third, sixth, ninth, 13th, 14th, 16th, and 17th holes, and never once collected a bogey.

This was Kim’s 11th career title on the LPGA Tour, however it was her first career major. At 27 years of age, Kim continues to be part of a strong South Korean female golf contingent. In addition to Lee and Inbee Park, Jin Young Ko is ranked first in the world, and Sung Hyun Park was ranked eighth in the world prior to the start of the Women’s PGA Championship.

There will be one more major in women’s golf during the 2020 season. That will take place in December, as the United States Women’s Open will be held at the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
