Corey Conners of Listowel, Ontario won his second PGA tournament of his career on Sunday. At the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio, Texas, Conners posted a four-round score of -15 to take the title. In fact, it was the second Valero Texas Open for Conners as he previously won in 2019.
Conners had a first round score of eight-under-par 64, second round score of even, third round score of three-under-par 69, and a fourth round score of four-under-par 68. He defeated American Sam Stevens of Fort Worth, Texas by one stroke, and Americans Sam Ryder and Matt Kuchar by two strokes. Ryder and Kuchar ironically both are natives of Winter Park, Florida, and had four round scores of -13.
Conners was the 2023 Valero Texas Open champion despite the fact he had two double bogeys. They came on the 16th hole in round two, and the sixth hole in round three.
This is the third time a Canadian has won on the PGA Tour in the 2022-23 golf season. In the fall of 2022, Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton, Ontario won the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi, and Adam Svensson of Surrey, British Columbia won the RSM Classic in St. Simons, Island, Georgia.
There is no doubt there is great depth in Canadian men’s golf at the moment. A record five Canadians participated at the World Golf Matchplay Championships in Austin, Texas this past month. Joining Conners, Svensson and Hughes were Nick Taylor of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Adam Hadwin of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Then at the Masters starting on Thursday, Conners will be joined by Svensson, Hughes and Mike Weir of Sarnia, Ontario. Conners qualified by being in the top 12 of the 2022 Masters, by winning the 2022 Valero Texas Open, by qualifying for the 2022 Tour Championship, by being in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings in 2022, and by being in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings in the week leading up to the Masters. Hughes qualified by winning the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship and being in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings in 2022. Svensson qualified by winning the 2022 RSM Classic and Weir qualified by winning the 2003 Masters.
