Coco Gauff splits with coach Brad Gilbert
September 20, 2024

According to Amy Woodyatt of CNN on Thursday, women’s tennis star Coco Gauff of Atlanta, Georgia has decided to split with her coach, Brad Gilbert of Oakland, California. The reason for the split comes down to results, and Gauff had a disappointing summer season with Gilbert at the helm.
Gauff’s losses included a 6-4, 6-3 loss to fellow American Emma Navarro in the fourth round of Wimbledon, a 7-6, 6-2 loss to Donna Vekic of Croatia in the third round of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Diana Shnaider of Russia in the third round of the National Bank Open in Toronto, a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 loss to Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters, and a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss to Navarro again…this time in the fourth round of the United States Open.
The results Gauff had with Gilbert as the coach were not all negative. Earlier this year they reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and French Open, and beat Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in the final of Auckland. Gauff and Gilbert had an outstanding 2023 summer together. They won the Washington Open, Cincinnati Open, and United States Open.
What is interesting is the fact that Gilbert still intends to coach at age 63, and even though he has been dealing with skin cancer. Gauff has currently seen her ranking drop from number two to number six. She is behind Iga Swiatek of Poland, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, Jessica Pegula of the United States, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the world rankings.
