The finals of the 2026 Madrid Open are in the books. The favourite won the men’s side, and there was an underdog winner on the women’s side. In the men’s final, Jannik Sinner of Italy continued his Masters 1000 series dominance as of late. After winning the Paris Masters in the fall, as well as Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo to begin 2026, he steamrolled past German Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2. In the process, Sinner became the first player ever to win five consecutive Masters 1000 Series events. In the women’s final, there was an upset. Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, the 26th seed, beat Mirra Andreeva of Russia, the ninth seed, 6-3, 7-5.
What we are seeing lately from Sinner as of late is simply extraordinary. With the wrist injury to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, it will be stunning if anyone beats him over the next two weeks on his home dirt in Rome, or at the second major of the season which starts later this month in Roland Garros. Remember, Zverev was the second seed at the Madrid Open, and only won three games in a match that lasted only 58 minutes to complete.
Sinner broke Zverev four times in four opportunities, and had the much better serve. He had eight aces compared to two for Zverev, and dominated the points won off the serve statistics. On the first serve, Sinner won 93% of the points, and on the second serve, Sinner won 56% of the points. On the first serve, Zverev won 52% of the points, and on the second serve, Zverev only won 29%. There was a difference of 41% on the first serve, and 27% on the second serve. We also saw Sinner’s dominance over Zverev, as he has won 10 of 14 matches head-to-head.
Zverev was one of three seeded players that Sinner beat in Madrid. He also beat Cam Norrie of Great Britain, the 19th seed, 6-2, 7-5, in the fourth round, and Arthur Fils of France, the 21st seed, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals. Recently, Fils won the Barcelona Open.
Kostyuk won her third career WTA title. She previously won the 2023 ATX Open in Austin, and the 2026 Open de Rouen in France. Sinner, meanwhile, has now won 28 ATP titles.
Over the last 10 days in Madrid, Kostyuk beat three seeded player. In addition to Andreeva, Kostyuk also beat the fifth seed, Jessica Pegula of the United States, 6-1, 6-4, in the third round, and the 13th seed, Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, 7-6, 6-0. in the quarterfinals. In the final, Kostyuk broke Andreeva four times, and had the slight service advantage. Kostyuk had four aces and two double faults. Andreeva had one ace and three double faults.
