NBA: Why Mark Walter Sold the Lakers Just Months After His $10 Billion Takeover

Mark Walter’s shock decision to sell the Lakers is becoming clearer, with financial pressure reportedly turning an unexpected offer into an irresistible escape route.

Josh Kushner and former Disney chief executive Bob Iger have agreed to purchase a controlling interest in the franchise at a record US$12.5 billion valuation, subject to NBA approval.

Lakers Change Hands Again

Walter became the Lakers’ majority owner in October 2025 after the NBA approved his purchase of the Buss family’s controlling interest.

That transaction valued the franchise at approximately US$10 billion, setting a record for a professional sports team at the time.

Less than a year later, Kushner and Iger have agreed to acquire Walter’s interest at a valuation US$2.5 billion higher.

The extraordinary details are examined in Fox Sports’ explanation of the Lakers’ US$12.5 billion sale.

The agreement remains subject to approval from the NBA’s board of governors, which is scheduled to meet in September.

Why Is Mark Walter Selling?

Walter did not purchase the Lakers with the publicly stated intention of selling them several months later.

However, The Wall Street Journal has reported that financial and regulatory pressure surrounding parts of his business empire created a need for additional liquidity.

Delaware regulators have reportedly required entities connected to Walter to strengthen their financial position, while federal prosecutors and the US Securities and Exchange Commission are examining whether insurers under his control adequately disclosed transactions involving other Walter-linked companies.

Walter has not been publicly charged with a crime in connection with those reported investigations.

The Lakers were also not formally placed on the open market. Kushner and Iger instead learned that Walter might consider an offer and moved quickly.

Iger said the transaction was assembled in only three days.

“It was suggested to us that maybe Mark Walter would be interested in selling his stake in the Lakers,” Iger said.

“We immediately decided that given the value of the franchise and the iconic nature of the team, that we would be really smart to pursue it.”

“The deal came together in three days. It’s that simple.”

A record US$12.5 billion valuation potentially gives Walter the opportunity to release capital while exiting an investment at a considerably higher valuation than when he entered.

The precise profit he will receive cannot be calculated without knowing the final stake size, financing structure, debt and transaction costs.

Who Is Josh Kushner?

Kushner is the founder of venture-capital firm Thrive Capital and the co-founder and vice-chairman of health insurer Oscar Health.

Thrive became a major technology investor through early or significant positions in businesses including Instagram, Spotify, Stripe and OpenAI.

Kushner also operates Thrive Eternal, a long-term investment vehicle that had been exploring sporting opportunities before the Lakers agreement.

He is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, who is married to US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka.

That relationship has fuelled conspiracy theories about the timing of Walter’s sale, but no evidence has established that Trump, his administration or Jared Kushner influenced the transaction.

Josh Kushner currently holds a minority interest in the Miami Heat. He will be required to sell that stake before taking control of another NBA franchise.

He previously held an ownership interest in the Memphis Grizzlies.

Who Is Bob Iger?

Iger is one of the most influential media executives in the United States after serving two separate periods as Disney’s chief executive.

During his leadership, Disney completed major acquisitions involving Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and much of 21st Century Fox.

His experience managing international entertainment brands could prove particularly valuable for a franchise with the Lakers’ global audience.

Iger and his wife, Willow Bay, became controlling owners of women’s football club Angel City FC in 2024.

He has also worked with Kushner’s investment businesses and joined him in exploring a potential bid for a future NBA expansion team in Las Vegas.

That plan changed when the Lakers became unexpectedly available.

“As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honoured for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers,” Kushner and Iger said.

“Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level and serve this extraordinary team, its fans and the city of Los Angeles.”

Jeanie Buss Is Not Immediately Disappearing

The deal does not necessarily mean Jeanie Buss will immediately leave the organisation.

Buss remained the Lakers’ governor after Walter acquired the controlling interest from her family in 2025.

Reports indicate she is expected to remain involved under the incoming ownership structure, although the full terms of her future role have not been publicly disclosed.

Buss has led the franchise’s basketball operations at ownership level since the death of her father, Jerry Buss, in 2013.

Keeping her involved would provide continuity during the Lakers’ third ownership structure in less than a year.

It would also allow Iger and Kushner to learn the organisation before making substantial changes.

New Owners Have Not Finalised Their Plans

Despite spending US$12.5 billion, Iger admitted the incoming ownership group has not developed a detailed plan for the Lakers.

“It would be premature to speculate,” Iger said.

The speed of the agreement partly explains that absence of an immediate strategy.

Kushner and Iger had been studying NBA ownership through the possible Las Vegas expansion project, but they were not conducting a long-term Lakers takeover before the opportunity emerged.

Their first priorities will likely include completing league approval, establishing the ownership structure and meeting the franchise’s basketball executives.

No confirmed decision has been made regarding front-office changes, a new arena or alterations to the Lakers’ existing management.

What Does the Sale Mean for Luka Dončić?

The Lakers are already rebuilding their future around Luka Dončić following LeBron James’ departure.

Dončić publicly welcomed the incoming owners and expressed his desire to bring another championship to Los Angeles.

“Being a Laker means everything to me, and I’m excited to get back on the court and bring a championship to LA,” Dončić wrote.

“I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together.”

Dončić gives Kushner and Iger an established franchise cornerstone rather than forcing the group to begin its tenure with a complete basketball rebuild.

The Lakers have already reshaped their roster around his playmaking and retained Austin Reaves as an important long-term partner.

Ownership wealth does not allow teams to ignore the NBA salary cap, but financially powerful owners can invest heavily in scouting, coaching, development, facilities and luxury-tax payments.

Their willingness to spend in those areas will matter more than the record purchase price.

Could the Lakers Build a New Arena?

The Lakers currently share Crypto.com Arena with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.

The agreement does not include a confirmed plan to construct a Lakers-owned venue.

However, control of a modern arena can generate significant revenue through naming rights, premium seating, hospitality, concerts and surrounding property development.

At a US$12.5 billion valuation, the potential to control more game-day revenue could eventually become an important consideration.

Iger and Kushner have not publicly committed to leaving Crypto.com Arena, and any suggestion that a new stadium is already planned remains speculation.

Why the Lakers Are Worth US$12.5 Billion

The Lakers have won 17 NBA championships and possess one of the largest international supporter bases in American sport.

Their history includes superstars such as George Mikan, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Dončić.

The franchise also benefits from its position in Los Angeles, long-term media value and close relationship with the entertainment industry.

Previous record franchise transactions included Walter’s US$10 billion Lakers deal and the US$6.1 billion sale of the Boston Celtics.

Kushner and Iger’s agreement raises the ceiling again.

The purchase price does not simply reflect the Lakers’ present revenue. It represents a bet that premium sporting content, international audiences and media rights will continue increasing in value.

Walter’s Short Ownership Could Still Be Spectacular Business

Walter described his time as majority owner as one of the greatest honours of his life.

“An extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans and a city that treats this team as family,” Walter said.

“The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead.”

His tenure may ultimately last less than one full NBA season.

That makes the takeover extraordinary, but not necessarily mysterious.

Walter reportedly needed greater financial flexibility. Kushner and Iger wanted an NBA franchise and presented an offer valuing the Lakers 25 per cent higher than the previous transaction.

The political connections and federal scrutiny surrounding the parties demand careful reporting, but they do not prove an improper arrangement.

The simplest explanation remains the strongest: Walter received a record offer at precisely the moment when additional liquidity became particularly valuable.
