NRL: What’s at Stake as Phoenix Crossland Faces Tuesday Judiciary

Newcastle hooker Phoenix Crossland fronts the NRL judiciary on Tuesday night after the match review committee referred him straight to the panel for the hip-drop tackle that left Nathan Cleary with a compound ankle fracture in Sunday’s preliminary final. With no grading attached to the referral, Crossland’s availability for Sunday’s grand final against the Sydney Roosters is the central question — and nothing is decided until the panel rules.

Crossland was sent off by referee Gerard Sutton late in the first half of Newcastle’s 22-14 win over Penrith at Accor Stadium, as covered in The Sporting Base’s match report. Cleary was stretchered from the field and later confirmed to have suffered a compound fracture; he has also been ruled out of Australia’s Rugby League World Cup campaign, TSB reported.

What the MRC decided

On Monday the NRL match review committee referred Crossland straight to the judiciary rather than attaching a charge grade that would have allowed an early guilty plea for a set suspension, ABC News and the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The Herald’s Chris Barrett wrote that the decision not to grade the incident “indicates the Knights dummy half faces a lengthy suspension” and that such a ban “would rule him out of Sunday’s grand final”. That remains reporting and expectation — not a panel finding. No graded charge sheet listing offence category or base penalty had been published on NRL.com at the time of writing.

Zero Tackle and ESPN (AAP) likewise reported the straight referral, with the length of any suspension to be set by the judiciary on Tuesday evening. The Herald said Newcastle would decide on a plea on Tuesday morning.

What Sutton said on the field

Sutton told Crossland and Knights captain Kalyn Ponga the tackle carried “extreme risk of serious injury” before ordering Crossland off, according to ABC News: “Initially he’s up high, he makes a definite action to twist. [He] comes down on the leg with weight, there’s extreme risk of serious injury. You’re off.”

Precedents — not a prediction

Recent hip-drop cases that went to the judiciary have drawn multi-week bans, but each case turns on its own facts.

ABC reported that Dragons forward Ryan Couchman was referred straight to the judiciary in round three for a hip-drop that ended Parramatta forward J’Maine Hopgood’s season with a torn ACL, and was suspended for four games. Judiciary chair Geoff Bellew said the panel accepted there was no intention or recklessness but found “the player’s level of culpability was significant, a factor reflected in the serious injury sustained by the ball carrier,” ABC quoted.

The Herald also pointed to Manly’s Toafofoa Sipley receiving four matches in 2025 for a hip-drop that left St George Illawarra winger Mathew Feagai with a broken leg. Those precedents are context only; they do not determine Crossland’s outcome.

What’s at stake for the Knights

Sunday’s grand final against the Roosters at Accor Stadium (7:30pm AEST) is already sold out, with Newcastle fans’ travel arrangements a major talking point after NRL chief executive Peter V’landys intervened on trackwork, as TSB reported.

If Crossland is unavailable, ESPN (AAP) and the Newcastle Herald have identified Harrison Graham — Newcastle’s bench hooker for most of 2026 — as the most likely starter at No.9. Official team lists are still due later on Tuesday and will be covered separately once released.

AAP reporting via ESPN has also floated that any suspension could extend past the grand final into next season, or that World Cup fixtures might be counted toward a ban depending on how the panel structures it. That remains speculative until the judiciary delivers its decision.

What happens next

Crossland’s hearing is scheduled for Tuesday night. Until the panel announces its finding, TSB will not state that he is suspended or ruled out of the grand final. The outcome — and any impact on Newcastle’s 22 — will be updated as soon as it is confirmed.
