Dear Joey: It’s Time To Answer NSW’s Call

State of Origin has become a battle of football minds as much as football teams, and right now Queensland holds the advantage. If New South Wales is serious about changing that, there is one man Blues fans want leading the fight — Andrew Johns.

Dear Andrew Johns,

Another Origin series has left New South Wales fans asking the same question: who is going to lead this state back to sustained success?

The Blues have changed coaches, selectors, captains and halves combinations over the years, yet the result often feels the same. Meanwhile, Queensland continues to find a way to get the best out of its biggest stars when it matters most.

That’s why this letter exists.

Not because NSW needs another coach, but because NSW needs the right coach.

A coach who understands what Origin football demands, who has lived the pressure, carried the expectations and delivered when it mattered most.

NSW needs Andrew Johns.

You’ve said no before, and that’s understandable. Coaching State of Origin is one of the toughest jobs in Australian sport. Every decision is scrutinised, every selection is debated and every defeat becomes front-page news.

But there may never be a better time to reconsider.

For years, NSW fans have watched Queensland build an Origin powerhouse around Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Darren Lockyer. Their advantage isn’t just football knowledge. It’s identity.

Queensland knows exactly who it is.

Every player who walks into Maroons camp understands the standards, the history and the expectations. They have leaders who have lived it and who know how to pass those lessons on to the next generation.

The Blues have spent years trying to find that same formula.

Nobody is better placed to provide it than you.

You played 23 Origin games for New South Wales, scored 94 points, won four Origin Man of the Match awards and captained your state. You didn’t just represent the Blues — you defined an era of Origin football for an entire generation of NSW fans.

When people talk about rugby league IQ, your name is always at the top of the conversation.

Every week fans watch you break down games and explain details others miss. Players, coaches and commentators have spent decades praising your ability to read defensive structures, predict momentum shifts and understand the game at a level few ever have.

The qualities that made you one of the greatest players in rugby league history are the same qualities that could make you an elite Origin coach.

Look across the border.

Billy Slater wasn’t a career coach when he took over Queensland. He was a champion player who understood the Maroons jersey and what it meant to represent his state.

The result has been a Queensland side that looks connected, confident and completely committed to a shared identity.

NSW desperately needs that.

The Blues’ latest Origin disappointment has once again sparked debate about selections, tactics and leadership. Fans are frustrated. Former players are frustrated. The state is searching for answers.

The reality is simple.

Queensland knows exactly who they are.

New South Wales still doesn’t.

That’s where you come in.

Imagine walking into Blues camp with your brother Matthew by your side.

Queensland has Billy Slater, Johnathan Thurston and Allan Langer helping shape its future.

Why can’t NSW counter with Andrew and Matty Johns?

One of the greatest football minds the game has ever produced alongside one of the best communicators and personalities in rugby league.

It wouldn’t just be a coaching appointment.

It would be a statement.

A declaration that New South Wales is finally prepared to fight fire with fire.

Matty himself has publicly supported the idea of a Johns brothers coaching ticket. And it’s not difficult to understand why.

Players would listen.

Fans would believe.

And for the first time in a long time, Queensland might be the side wondering what comes next.

Because here’s the truth, Joey.

NSW doesn’t need another administrator.

It doesn’t need another safe option.

And it certainly doesn’t need another coach learning Origin football on the run.

It needs someone who understands exactly what it means to wear that sky-blue jersey.

Someone who hates losing to Queensland as much as the fans do.

Someone who knows what greatness looks like because he’s lived it.

Someone like you.

The Blues need a leader.

The fans want a leader.

And whether you’ve said no before or not, New South Wales needs to ask the question again.

Because if Billy Slater could answer Queensland’s call, maybe it’s finally time for Andrew Johns to answer New South Wales’.

Yours sincerely,

Every frustrated Blues fan.

CHANCES ARE YOU’RE ABOUT TO LOSE.
